Makola Market – Phase I
Makola Market is one of Accra’s most iconic landmarks. The original market was constructed in 1924 and has since grown into a bustling hub of commerce where traders sell everything from car parts and fresh produce to vibrant fabrics and clothing. The market is renowned for its energetic atmosphere and the vital role it plays in the local economy—women traders dominate the marketplace, driving business and community life.
Phase I refers to the historic core of Makola Market. The stalls here are closely packed, creating a lively maze of alleyways filled with sights, sounds and scents. MMC maintains common areas, ensures that waste is collected promptly and coordinates with municipal authorities to support the traders.
In the aftermath of a major fire in 1993, parts of the market were rebuilt and expanded, leading to the development of Phase II. Together the two phases form the heart of Accra’s trading activity.
