Makola Market – Phase II

Makola Market

Phase II of Makola Market was built following the 1993 fire to replace the destroyed Makola No. 2 Market. The new structure offers multi‑level stalls, improved fire safety measures and modern amenities. Managed privately as part of a public‑private consortium, it is one of only two privately owned and managed markets in Accra.

Despite its improved facilities, some shops remain empty due to access challenges and relatively high rents; the market nevertheless hosts around 1,000 traders, contributing significantly to the local economy. MMC works closely with stakeholders to address occupancy and ensure that the market remains a thriving commercial centre.

Phase II complements the historic Phase I market and together they offer a dynamic and diverse shopping experience for residents and visitors alike.
